Mission

B. E. S. T. was designed to develop the total young man of color by:

(1) enhancing his intellectual development;

(2) establishing stable, positive economic empowerment;

(3) creating an appreciation and respect for self and others through nurturing relationships;

(4) creating an environment of responsible concern;

(5) promoting a true understanding of their spiritual and cultural connectedness; and

(6) establishing strong confident educational basis; and
initiating the psychological, physical, emotional, spiritual, academic, economic, and moral healing for self and the environment.

Purpose

B. E. S. T. strives to create and establish a creative, collaborative environment of realistic hope and encouragement that yields a genuine concern for our young men of color by blending traditional approaches with innovative, creative strategies that are result – oriented that collectively promote and encourage positive, productive life choices.

Problems and Opportunities

Young men of color are experiencing psychological, social, emotion, and physical attacks on wholesale dimensions. The assaults are striking with such magnitude that the results are evident:

(1) within their family;

(2) within their relationships and social interactions;

(3) in the educational arenas;

(4) in the economic productivity; and

(5) in their health maintenance.

Young men of color, more than any other segment within our society, are more prone:

(a) to display undisciplined behaviors;

(b) to be affected with a negative, academic progress;

(c) to experiment and/or practice risky behaviors;

(d) to be the product of single parent families;

(e) to be the product of, or to be the direct cause of, an escalation of surrogate parenting;

(f) to be the recipient of multiple labels and stereotypes by the education system, the justice system, and society itself;

(g) to shun the responsibilities of responsible manhood and/or fatherhood;

(h) to be victims of criminal activity;

(i) to continue to perpetuate the existence of dysfunctional relationship;

(j) to prolong the rise of single parent homes;

(k) to be attracted to alternative income means, which usually complicate their lives; and

(l) to be involved in domestic abuse and/or violence.

The roots of these problems seem to stem from the environment from which they come and are brought up in, and it has created a fulfilling prophecy by which other generations are plagued. Their reactions to these situations, which, in many cases, are systematically designed to devour the unknowing suspect, tend to ravage masses of people. Young men of color tend to become “ready participants” and “ready prey”, thus causing havoc to these young men, fragmenting the family, and crippling agencies. Their reactions to these situations not only hurt the individual young man but it cuts into and through the very fiber of the culture and society as well.

B.E.S.T. addresses each of the sources of the problems as well as the results of the problems that center around young men of color. By focusing on the roots and the results, it enables more aggressive and concentrated efforts to be provided that would drastically minimize the global repercussions of their reactions.

Process

B.E.S.T. is a two – year embracing process. B.E.S.T. prides itself in developing and delivering unparallel processes, activities, and services that are unique and exceptional yet comprehensive and inclusive.

We intentionally focus on intellectual development, character development, spiritual and cultural connectedness, psychological/emotional healing, and economical empowerment.

Each of the processes fit together to provide meaningful, significant yet consequential, important exercises; logical yet valid experiences; thorough yet systematic training; and methodical yet meticulous practices.

We have been privileged to partner with many community organizations and agencies, working unselfishly together, to offer uncompromising, ethical services that ensure the confidence of our clients, their families, as
well as our community.

The holistic curriculum addresses not only the problems that plague our young men of color but also the roots that cause and initiate the problems for our young men. The young men will be exposed and experience character building, leadership development, responsible behavior, ethical and moral decision-making, intellectual re-enforcement and support, state-of-the art technical training, and on-the-job/entrepreneurial development.

Admissions

B.E.S.T. operates solely by referrals. It was uniquely designed to deter and break the cycles of incarceration and detention; therefore, B.E.S.T. and its processes target at- risk young men of color who:

1) may have personally experienced a negative encounter with the criminal justice system or

2) have a parent or sibling who has had or is experiencing a negative encounter with the penal system.

In special circumstances, B.E.S.T. may consider a young man that is referred as a deterrent tactic. An intake process has been designed to determine compatibility.

Principles of Success

B.E.S.T. is pleased to use the IEE plan in the development and execution of each of the processes.

B.E.S.T. carefully and deliberately incorporated the ideas of up–and–coming young professionals who can and will apply Innovation (creativity) in their approach, the Electricity and energy that comes from understanding and recognizing the components of situations and accepting the challenge and responsibility of doing something about them, and the Experience and wisdom that only come from time and trials to bring balance. The careful blending of each of these unique contributions has enabled B.E.S.T. to create a creative, electrifying, idealistic process that values the principles of success.
